BANGALORE: Four Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs have urged the party high command to retain B S Yeddyurappa as chief minister in the overall interest of the state, government and the party.

The four MLAs are Nandish Reddy (K R Puram), Satish Reddy (Bommanahalli), Suresh Gowda (Tumkur Rural) and Vishwanath (Yelahanka). All the four are nonLingayats. The MLAs said Opposition's charges of corruption were politically motivated. They said there was nothing illegal in any of the transactions of the government.

Nandish Reddy said it would be fair to let Yeddyurappa continue as the government had ordered a judicial probe, headed by a former High Court judge, to look into the charges. The MLA said the probe would cover the decisions of the BJP government too and "in this background, it is in the interest of natural justice that he should be retained till the commission gives its report."

All the four claimed that the BJP government headed by Yeddyurappa had brought qualitative changes in the state by implementing innovative and propeople schemes.

Asked whether the high command has asked Yeddyurappa to quit and if this was the reason for them to urge the central leadership to retain him, Nandish Reddy replied in the negative. "Our response is to the demand being made by the Opposition parties", he said.

'Justice Hegde should watch his words'

Suresh Gowda took strong exception to Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde's statement, wherein he had said returning the disputed land did not absolve Yeddyurappa of the wrongdoing.

"There was no need for Justice Hegde to make such comments. It tantamounts to insulting the chief minister. It is a different matter that rival party politicians speak in that language but this was not expected from a Judge", Gowda said.
