BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to frame rules to regulate sand mining in the state by December 10.

The court was hearing the writ petition filed by some private parties requesting the court to direct the state government to permit them to mine sand through motor boats as the state government had prohibited them from collecting sand, after receiving deposits for the same for the past two months.

The state government contended that the chief secretary had already framed ruled to make an amendment to Mines and Minerals Act 1994, to regulate sand mining using mechanised boats and the amendment will be made as soon as the Cabinet approved it. The government also sought two weeks time to amend the Act due to the present political situation in the state.

The division bench, headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar suggested the state government to go ahead with the proceedings after obtaining signatures from the concerned people from wherever they were. The court also directed the government to explore the possibility of allowing sand miners to mine sand or to refund the money they deposited.
