BANGALORE: To overcome the shortage of teaching faculty, the state government has decided to recruit 1,765 lecturers in Pre-University Colleges (PUC) within the next few months, Minister Visveshwara Hegde Kageri said here on Wednesday.

Addressing newsmen here, the minister said that following the government’s decision to start new PU colleges in many taluks, the number of vacancies for faculty members has increased. He said that the recruitment of lecturers would be done on merit basis and candidates having post-graduation and BEd degree are eligible to apply for postings in various subjects, including Chemist r y , P h y s i c s a n d Mathematics.

In another decision, the minister said that the state government has decided to pay a monthly salary of `1,100 for main cooks and `1,000 for assistant cooks who prepare mid-day meals in aided private institutions.

He said that the decision to pay salaries to those who were working in the private aided institutions would cost `15 crore to the state exchequer a year and would benefit about 4,095 main cooks and 9,497 assistant cooks in over 6,024 schools.
