Bid to split Rangayana slammed

Taking serious exception to the proposal of splitting the Rangayana repertory in Mysore, eminent theatre director Prasanna said that Ranga Samaj, the management of Rangayana, lacked knowledge about the significance of Rangayana which was built with a clear intention to develop theatre activities.

He was speaking after inaugurating a seminar on ‘Life and Writings of Late Lingadevaru Halemane,’ former director of Rangayana, on Sunday.

He said that many personalities, including late B V Karantha, dedicated themselves 25 years ago to build Rangayana, which has grown to new heights with a brand image of its own.

But a minister is trying to split the troupe of artistes working in Rangayana in Mysore, besides giving meaningless statements without understanding the objective of Rangayana, said Prasanna. In a statement issued in Bijapur recently, Kannada and Culture Minister Govind Karajol had defended his stand of splitting of 18 artistes’ troupe of Rangayana Mysore unit into three, and sending six artistes each to Shimoga and Dharwad units of Rangayana. For this, litterateurs in Mysore had strongly raised objections.
