Lingayats in Congress out to assert

Lingayat leaders and elected representatives of the Congress met here on Monday evening and have decided to meet central party leaders to press for greater representation for their community within the party.

According to party sources, around 20 legislators participated in a meeting that was chaired by KPCC treasurer and MLA Shamanur Shivashankarappa.

The meeting assumes importance given that Assembly elections to the state are round the corner.

Prominent attendees at the meet include KPCC vice-president Malak Reddy, former ministers Sharanabasappa Darshanapur, C S Nadagouda, Rajashekhar Patil, M B Patil, Dr Sharana Prakash Patil and Allam Prabhu Patil.

The members reportedly urged that the post of KPCC president be reserved for a person from the community as it will play a crucial role during the elections.

The support of Lingayat community is crucial for the party, which has remained out of power for eight years, since the collapse of the JD(S)-Cong government.
