Relay hunger strike in Bylakuppe against self-immolation in Tibet

Tibetan Youth Congress and Tibetan Women’s Association activists are on an indefinite relay hunger strike in Bylakuppe Tibetan settlement near Kushalnagar against the increase in self-immolation cases in Tibet.

More than 20 activists began a 24-hour relay hunger strike four days ago to exert pressure on the Chinese government and the world community.

The association said that 83 Tibetans have resorted to self-immolation in the last two years and such cases have increased in the past couple of months due to human rights violations and atrocities on women by the Chinese. The Tibetans have also started special prayers at the strike venue near the Tibetan Medical centre and plan to intensify the stir.

They demanded that the Chinese government should explain the rise in the number of self-immolation cases especially by youths, including schoolchildren in Tibet.
