Gear up for polls, says Election Commission

With elections for the urban local bodies approaching, the state Election Commission (EC) has instructed district administration to prepare for it and not get engaged in socio-cultural events.

The state EC in its Bangalore region meeting hinted at elections for the local bodies across the state in February 2013. The administrations were advised not to hold district-level events such as Zilla Utsavs and similar programmes between December 2012 and February 2013.

Deputy Commissioner R K Raju  said, “The annual Zilla Utsav which was to be held in  January will be postponed.”

This election would be a precursor to the next Assembly polls with the current government finishing its term in May 2013.

As many as eight city corporations, 43 city municipal councils, 94 town municipalities and 68 town panchayats will go to the polls.

Elections would also be held to three newly notified urban local bodies Shahabad in Gulbarga, Gokak Falls in Belgaum and Kudremukh in Chikmagalur.
