Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday called upon senior police officials to lay more emphasis on strict implementation of law.
On the 30th day after assuming office, the Chief Minister asked police officials to enhance implementation of law to be on par with a few developed countries and also asked them to be compassionate to people. Siddaramaiah held closed-door meetings with senior police officials for almost four hours and directed them to put an end to all illegal activities across the state.
He categorically stated that illegal activities like betting, video parlours, organised crime and live bands should be stopped immediately. “This government has ensured a non-corrupt administration. Despite knowing that corruption has become part of the system, I am making it clear that corruption will not be tolerated. I am not saying all are corrupt, but corrupt people are everywhere. Any official caught or raided for corruption will be dealt with sternly. Your authority and accountability go together,” Siddaramaiah said. He observed that intelligence is poor and lacks professionalism.
He also said that MLAs’ intervention in police functioning needs to be dealt by the officials.
“MLAs may interfere in your work, but it is also your responsibility to convince the public representatives about the legal aspects and take a legally right decision. We (representatives) are answerable to public and legislature. Similarly, you (police) are answerable to us. I know that there is a practice that ruling party MLAs dictate whether a couse should be registered or not. This should end and I assure you that I will not interfere as long as the law is upheld,” he said.
