Heavy rain likely for next 3 days in North, Coastal areas

With the south-west monsoon vigorous over coastal Karnataka, the northern and coastal regions of the state are likely to receive widespread and heavy rainfall for the next three days, according to Indian Meteorological Department.

Widespread, moderate to very heavy rain was  received in Shimoga, Chikmagalur, Uttara Kannada, Gadag, Kodagu, Belgaum, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Raichur and Dharwad on Tuesday and Wednesday. Meanwhile, maximum rainfall of 156.5mm was recorded at Kodkani in Siddapur taluk of Uttara Kannada district.

As against a normal rainfall of 8.4 mm on Tuesday, the coastal region received 41.47 mm. It was 28.7 mm in Malnad against 4.8 mm.

During the cumulative period from June 1 to September 16, the state as a whole recorded 866 mm of rainfall as against the normal rainfall of 744 mm, an excess of 16 per cent. However, out of total 3,554 minor irrigation tanks in the state, 53 per cent of them are dry, according to the report of Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre.
