Governor H R Bhardwaj’s move to extend the services of the controversial Vice-chancellor of the VTU, H Maheshappa, by one year came under hammer in the Legislative Council on Wednesday.

An adverse remark by JD(S) member Puttanna, against the Governor, who is the  Chancellor of universities, was expunged by Deputy Chairperson Vimala Gowda, who was in the Chair.

Raising the issue,  JD(S) member Basavaraj Horatti, said V-C  is indulging in a recruitment spree and has turned it into a ‘money spinning’ business. He urged the State government to intervene and halt  it.

Higher Education Minister R V Deshpande temporarily stayed the recruitment process for seven days.  He also promised to raise the matter in the Cabinet meeting.
