A stray wild tusker crushed a 60-year-old deaf and dumb man to death on Tuesday morning, after he stepped out of his house in Dindavara village of Hiriyur taluk in Chitradurga.
The deceased was identified as Kariya Bhovi. Eyewitnesses said the elephant attacked Bhovi when he had gone to attend nature’s call.
The forest department announced a cash compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of Kariya Bhovi and Rs 5,000 was handed over to relatives of the deceased for the last rites. It is believed that the elephant might have come to the village from Chikkanayakanahalli of Tumkur district.
