The Kasarkod eco-beach at Honnavar, a model to promote eco-tourism in coastal areas, was inaugurated by Tourism Minister R V Deshpande here on Wednesday.

The eco-beach was developed jointly by the Tourism and Forest Departments and Kasarkod Village Forest Committee at a cost of Rs 84.5 lakh. The eco-project developed on 100 hectares along the shores of Kasarkod beach has casuarina plantations and other attractions such as children’s park, trampoline jump, boating facility, plinth stone and other attractions.

The minister said the government is planning to promote eco-tourism in the state in a big way and a proposal has already been sent to the Union Ministry of Environment for approval.

Noting that the state has a stretch of 320 km coastline, he said selected places will be developed under the eco- tourism project after getting the necessary approvals. It will be the responsibility of the local bodies to establish and maintain these tourist destinations,” Deshpande said. Meanwhile, he gave away cheques worth over `1 crore to various Village Forest Committees. The money was generated by sale of plantations that were maintained by the VFCs and the Forest Department for the last ten years.
