The government will construct a memorial and make Betageri village in Gokak taluk, the birthplace of poet Betageri Krishna Sharma, a acultural centre, said Betageri Krishna Sharma Memorial Trust president Raghavendra Patil.

He was speaking at the 114th birth anniversary of Krishna Sharma, organised by the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) at Betageri on Sunday.

He said the late poet’s relatives had agreed to donate around 7,000 sq feet surrounding Sharma’s house for the memorial. An exhibition centre displaying the possessions of the poet, auditorium, library and guest house will be constructed at the site.

The blueprint of the plan is ready, and the project will be completed in one-and-a-half-years.

Patil said reprinting of around 60 books by Sharma was in progress.

The trust has conducted a Gita Gayana programme where students in colleges across the state were exposed to Sharma’s poetry.
