BANGALORE: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has convened a meeting of all deputy commissioners to assess development and flood relief work in the state, on Monday.
This comes in the wake of the Opposition criticising the government for failing to provide relief to districts affected by the recent floods. The Opposition has also been targeting the government for poor governance.
The chief minister is expected to haul up officials who were lax in their handling of flood relief and development works at the meeting. Twenty-four people were killed and over 11,000 houses damaged in the recent rains in eight districts of North Karnataka.
According to a source in the Karnataka State Disaster Monitoring Centre, the region received unprecedented rains between August 19 and 30. The state government had presented a memorandum to the Centre seeking an assistance of `266 crore for flood relief operations.
The Opposition leader in the Assembly Jagadish Shettar and JD(S) group leader in the Assembly H D Kumaraswamy had charged that the government failed to address the grievances of the flood-hit residents.
