Congress president Sonia Gandhi's one-day visit to Gulbarga on Saturday is expected to give a fillip to the party's poll campaign in the state for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
During her whirlwind visit, she is scheduled to inaugurate the ESIC Medical College, buildings of the dental and nursing colleges and the 500-bed super specialty hospital. She will also attend a public rally at NV Grounds.
Bidar MP Dharam Singh told Express that around two lakh people from all the five Lok Sabha constituencies - Gulbarga, Raichur, Koppal, Bidar and Bellary - will attend the rally.
Party workers and leaders will also felicitate the party chief for her contribution in conferring special status to the Hyderabad-Karnataka region. Singh said Sonia had played a key role in amending Article 371(J) of the Constitution. He was confident that the Congress will bag all the five seats as people of the region had always stood by the party. Special Protection Group sleuths are taking care of security along with the police. Superintendent of Police Amith Singh told Express that around 1,400 personnel, including two SPs, two additional SPs, 17 DySPs, 40 inspectors and 70 PSIs from Gulbarga, Belgaum and Davangere ranges have been deployed.
Congress MLA Priyank Kharge told Express that the organisers have made seating arrangements for over one lakh at the main venue. "We have never seen such an unprecedented response to the rally from the people," he said.
