Former minister S A Ramdas is said to have attempted suicide in Mysore on Tuesday night, hours after a woman accused him of cheating her after promising to marry her.

Ramdas, the medical education minister in the previous BJP government, is said to have been upset over the allegations and tried to hang himself at a Mysore City Corporation guest house around 9.30 pm. He was soon rushed to Apollo BGS Hospital around 10.10 pm by his driver.

Corporator Snake Shyam told reporters that Ramdas was responding to treatment and is out of danger.

A huge number of BJP workers assembled outside the hospital as news spread. As crowds began to gather, a few people blamed the media for the incident, and demanded that they leave the hospital. MLA Sa Ra Mahesh, BJP city unit president Maruti Rao Pawar and corporator Shivakumar pacified them. Police Commissioner M A Saleem confirmed that Ramdas had tried to hang himself and said he is out of danger.

Earlier in the day, the woman who levelled allegations against the former minister, had threatened to lodge a complaint and also end her life if Ramdas disowned her in public. As she was talking to reporters, Ramdas is said to have called her and threatened to commit suicide if she continued to talk to press.

The woman said she first met him around five years ago when he was parliamentary secretary to the then CM B S Yeddyurappa in 2009.

She had approached Ramdas for a transfer from Mysore from Tarikere in Chikmagalur where she was working as a second division assistant in the Revenue Department. They then became intimate, she claimed.

However, she did not provide any proof to substantiate her charges.

A widow and mother of two children, she said, “We got secretly married five years ago when he accepted me as his wife by applying vermilion (sindhura) on my forehead. I patiently waited all these years for him to publicly announce our marriage. Every time I brought up this subject, he cited political reasons and kept dodging the issue.”

“Unable to bear the isolation, I approached Ramdas again to marry me. He said our relationship can’t be made public, but instead expressed his desire to continue the relationship unofficially. I got transferred to Mysore on deputation...and  within three months I was transferred to Tumkur. The reason for my transfer was Ramdas. I quit within a few days  to stay with Ramdas.”

“I want Ramdas to accept me as his wife and I wish to lead a normal life,” she said.

When contacted, Ramdas denied all allegations and said that she was blackmailing him.
