The Congress’s all-women’s rally at Tumkur featuring Rahul Gandhi turned out to be yet another occasion for party leaders to shower praises on members of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

It started with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who said the contribution of family members from Jawaharlal Nehru to Sonia Gandhi to the welfare of the AHINDA(Kannada acronym for minorities, Backward Classes and Dalits) was immense. He asked people to question the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on what his party’s contribution to these classes was as it had opposed initiatives such as the Mandal Commission’s report.

While KPCC president Dr G Parameshwara termed Indira Gandhi as being the country’s iron woman, Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree reminded the audience about the graphic details of Rajiv Gandhi’s death in a suicide bomb blast. “Have any of the BJP’s leaders sacrificed like the Nehru-Gandhi family? Sonia has been leading the party from the front despite her poor health,” she declared.

B L Shankar, a senior party leader with a socialist background, who presided over the event, also donned the hat of a translator for Rahul, allowing the latter to take his own time to deliver his speech.
