The seven-year-old girl, who was rescued from the clutches of Sadashivappa Nemagouda alias Appaiahswamy by the district administration in Athani on Wednesday, is responding well to treatment at the district hospital in Belgaum, police said.
Appaiahswamy was produced before court on Thursday and remanded in two-day judicial custody. The police are now seeking custody of Appaiahswamy.
This is the second time the girl has been rescued from Appaiahswamy. A year ago, he had adopted her without the knowledge of the Women and Child Welfare Department. However, she was rescued in June 2013.
The Women and Child Welfare Department in Belgaum then handed over the case to their counterparts in Bagalkot, who handed over the girl to her parents. The department had taken down in writing from her parents that they would take care of her and not give her up. However, the authorities concerned failed to follow up on the case and did not know that girl’s parents had once again handed her over to Appaiahswamy.
