A group of Russians who arrived here with the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya a week ago have caused an uproar among the locals by their behaviour.

On Saturday, around 50 Russians, who were not briefed by the Navy about the rules and regulations here, ventured out of the aircraft carrier and were drinking alcohol in public and going around the beach naked.

As there are no changing rooms at the Rabindranath Tagore beach in Karwar, they had to change at the seashore itself before going for a swim. Further, there are not many pubs and restaurants at the town, and unlike in Goa, there are no beach shacks too.

Residents of Karwar, who flock to the beach during weekends, were shocked by the nude Russians and raised an alarm. The town police were immediately called in to control the situation and due to a communication gap, it took time for the police to control the situation.

“Such things may be permitted in neighbouring Goa, but not in Karwar. This will only influence our kids and they might do the same tomorrow,” said Gajanan Naik, a Karwar resident.
