Infant’s Death Sparks Row Over Pentavalent Vaccine in Tumkur

TUMKUR: A fresh row erupted over the controversial Pentavalent vaccine after the death of an infant who was administered the vaccine at Bestarapalya village near here on Friday.
On Thursday at 11 am, one-and-a-half-year-old Varshitha, daughter of Manjula and Narasimhamurthy, was administered oral polio drops besides Pentavalent vaccine at Hebbur Primary Health Centre (PHC).The child developed fever after reaching home and she was administered a syrup given by the doctors. However, the child died at 3 am on Friday. The parents alleged that the vaccination led to her death.
Taluk health officer Dr Sharathchandra said the infant was healthy when it was administered the vaccine. The child was kept under observation for 45 minutes before she was sent back, he said and added that only the post-mortem report can throw more light.
The child’s body was handed over to the parents after the autopsy.
