MANGALORE: The Shiradi Ghat Road will remain closed from December 1 to May 30 to enable development works. Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim, at a meeting on Friday, said the road will be developed at a cost of Rs 150 crore within six months. Five alternative roads that lead to Bangalore have already been identified, he said.
These are the Charmady route, Madikeri-Mysore route, Brahmavar-Siddapur-Hulikal- Shimoga route, Mangalore-Karkala-Chikmagalore route and Agumbe-N R Pura- Tarikere route. However, only light vehicles are allowed on the Agumbe route, Ibrahim said.
Survey in a Week
Officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), who were also present at the meet, said they will submit a report on vehicular movement on NH-75 within a week. The number of vehicles using the road has significantly declined in the last three years after the movement of mining lorries was stopped. On an average, nearly 25,000 vehicles use the highway in a day, Ibrahim said.
