An elderly man chopped his wife’s head with a sword on Thursday morning, leaving his village aghast.

Mohamed Hanif Kulmi of Halesidenur village near here violently ended his 55-year-old wife Jahirabi’s life in the early hours when she was asleep.

Kulmi lived separately from his wife. The couple have four children. He told the police he had murdered Jahirabi because she had stopped caring for him and was not serving him food properly.

Carrying her head in his hand, Kulmi paraded it along the streets and walked three km to the Byadagi police station.

Villagers gaped at him and women slammed their doors shut.

Some policemen in this north Karnataka town tried to capture him, but he dodged them, saying he would hand over the chopped head at the Byadagi police station.

Superintendent of Police N Shashikumar visited the village. Villagers urged him not to send Kulmi back after his punishment, saying they didn’t want someone like him among them in the village .

Circle Inspector Halmurthyrao told reporters that Kulmi had confessed to the crime.
