Govt Moves to Protect Belgaum Fort

BELGAUM: The state government has decided to declare the historic Belgaum Fort a state protected monument and has invited the public to file objections, if any, within the next 60 days.

Objections can be sent to the Principal Secretary, Kannada and Culture, Information and Public Relations Department, Room No 2, Vikasa Soudha, Bangalore.

The need to preserve the fort came to light when the Income Tax Department proposed to construct its office beside the fort’s entrance, which would end up covering a portion of it. This, people feared, would destroy the historic look of the fort and many residents and organisations filed objections.
