BANGALORE: Advocate General Ravivarma Kumar on Monday urged Chief Justice of India H L Dattu to set up a Supreme Court bench in South India, preferably in Bangalore.

He was speaking at a function organised by the Advocates Association of Bangalore here to felicitate Dattu on assuming the highest post in the judiciary.

Kumar said: “The Constitution has vested power with the CJI on taking a decision on the establishment of an SC bench outside Delhi.”

If the CJI proposes an SC bench in other states, the proposal needs a nod from the President, he said.

However, the CJI did not respond to the appeal.

The CJI said he would give his best to “do what he is supposed to do”.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Association president K N Subba Reddy, Dattu’s wife Gayatri Dattu, Karnataka Chief Justice D H Waghela, SC Judge V Gopala Gowda and others were present.
