'Government Not Keen on Starting Ayya Canteens'

BANGALORE: Food and Civil Supplies Minister Dinesh Gundurao on Monday said the department is not eager to open Ayya canteens on the lines of Tamil Nadu’s Amma outlets.

After visiting the KPCC office here, he told reporters: “At present, we are concentrating only on distributing foodgrains at cheaper rate to the targeted sections under the Anna Bhagya scheme.”

However, he said the state is not averse to the idea to open Ayya canteens. “If the Union Government funds the scheme, we will ensure its implemention.” In the last six months seven lakh bogus BPL cards were cancelled, he said and adding: “We have received over 23.50 lakh applications seeking BPL cards, in which only 4.5 lakh applications found in order.”

The minister also heard grievances of the party workers.
