BENGALURU: The BJP has flayed the state government for not giving permission to prosecute tainted officials.

Speaking to reporters, Opposition leader Jagadish Shettar criticised the double standards of the Congress government saying, “It is unfortunate that the party which came to power with a promise of taking action against the corrupt is now protecting them.”

He also demanded the government to settle `4,600 crore dues owed by sugar mill owners to farmers. “We are going to take up these issues in the legislature session starting June 29,” he said. The government, instead of ensuring justice for farmers, is supporting mill owners, Shettar alleged.

Referring to the recent suicide of Gurunath Chapagavi, a sugarcane farmer, in Belagavi, the Opposition leader said the farmer committed suicide as he didn’t get `78,000 dues from sugar mills.

Shettar also condemned the double standards in awarding compensation. “If a person is killed by an elephant, the government gives `5 lakh to the family, whereas if a farmer commits suicide, the family gets just `1 lakh.”

He said the BJP will also raise the issue of murder of student Yellalinga, allegedly by supporters of Irrigation Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi in Koppal district, and demand action against the minister.
