BENGALURU: The South-west Monsoon which hit the coast of Karnataka on June 5, has covered the state in eight days. The total rain across the state was 79 mm, which is normal for the period, said Sunder M Metri, Indian Meteorological Department head in Bengaluru.Last year, the monsoon hit on June 9 and covered the state by June 20. Rains were deficient till June 16, he added.

Coastal Karnataka

Coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada has so far recorded 265 mm rainfall and show deficient patterns. Last year,  it was 203 mm, which is even lesser.

North-Interior Karnataka

The eleven districts of Bagalkot, Belagavi, Bidar, Vijayapura, Dharwad, Gadag, Kalaburagi, Haveri, Koppal, Raichur and Yadgir recorded 50 mm rainfall in the last eleven days. “The rainfall seems to be following a normal trend,” Metri said.

Last year, these districts had received 35 mm till the June 16 (a period of seven days) and showed a deficient pattern.

South-Interior Karnataka

The sixteen districts of Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Ballari, Chamarajnagar, Chikkaballapur, Chikkamagaluru, Chitradurga, Davangere, Hassan, Kodagu, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagaram, Shivamogga and Tumakuru received 66 mm rainfall till date. These are also normal, Metri said.

He said last year, these districts received 66.8 mm, which seemed to be following a normal pattern. The IMD has predicted a monsoon that will be 88 pc. Metri said, “We think it will be just that little bit deficient.”
