CHIKBALLAPUR: Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly N H Shivashankar Reddy had to face severe embarrassment at a public function here on Sunday when a person flung a footwear at him. The footwear missed the target and landed on Reddy’s gunman.

The man, identified as Jayarama Reddy (55) of Halaganahalli, was immediately caught by the public and severely thrashed before being handed over to the police.

The incident occurred when Reddy was about to leave after participating in a function organised by the Agriculture Department at Vidurashwatha, in Gowribidanur taluk of Chikballapur district.

When Reddy was getting down from the dais, Jayarama rushed towards the Deputy Speaker with a footwear to attack him. He was, however, neutralised by Reddy’s gunman Pavan. Enraged by this, Reddy’s supporters assaulted Jayarama, who sustained injuries, before handing him over to the police.

Chikballapur Superintendent of Police Divya V Gopinath told Express that on the complaint of gunman Pavan, a case has been registered against Jayarama. Sources said Jayarama was ‘mentally unstable’.

The visibly upset Deputy Speaker, after the incident, pacified his supporters and general public, and urged them not to attack him. Police will take up the issue, he said.
