BENGALURU: Governor Vajubhai Vala hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s practice of yoga and said it was his regular practice that helped him manage himself well, to do his duty, and also keep a check on the opposition.

“By performing yoga, one can keep his/her mind and body fit,” Vala said at the inauguration of an International Day of Yoga event organised by Rastrothana Parishat in Basavangudi on Sunday.

“Yoga should not be limited to one day. It has to be practised every day,” he said and added that Baba Ramdev, a yoga guru, has proved that diabetes can be controlled by yoga.

RSS leader Mangesh Bande pointed out that if mind is not controlled, it would lead to a lot of complications and due to sedentary lifestyles even fitness had become a concern. “Yoga is not linked to any religion and it is wrong to give it a religious tag,” Bande said.

Union Minister H N Ananth Kumar, former governor of Bihar Rama Jois, MLA B N Vijay Kumar and other leaders also participated in the event. An exhibition on yoga was held and certificates were handed out to students.

Staff and nursing students of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Disease performed yoga at the Manpho convention Centre in Hebbal. As many as 500 visually impaired students trained by Akshar Power Yoga Academy performed asanas. Speaking about the event, Grand Master Akshar said, “Yoga is a scientific system of physical and mental practices. Its purpose is to help each one of us achieve our highest potential.... Because yoga works on so many different levels, it has great potential as an effective therapy for the visually impaired students.
