BELAGAVI:  Incessant rain accompanied by strong winds uprooted several trees, inundated low-lying areas and disrupted power supply at many places, throwing life out of gear in Belagavi district on Sunday.

Heavy showers choked gutters which overflowed, marooning low-lying areas and cutting road connectivity.

The old bridge of Khanapur over Malaprabha river is now under 3 metres of flood water. Kankumbi, Jamboti, Holmani and surrounding villages of Khanapur taluk also experienced rain. Strong winds with rain, which uprooted trees, caused damage to electric cables, disrupting power supply to many villages. The power supply of villages Gavali, Krishnapur, Kongla villages were disconnected due to rain and are expected to be restored after the end of monsoon.

Gokak and Savadatti taluks also witnessed heavy rain on Saturday evening.

Telephone Lines Disconnected

Sirsi: Following incessant rain with gusty wind over the last two days in Sirsi, life in various taluks has been disrupted.

Rivulets are overflowing and many trees were uprooted disrupting the plying of vehicles to the rural areas. Telephone lines in many villages have been disconnected and paddy fields and areca plantations are inundated.

According to a report from Andagi and Kankoppa villages in Banavasi region, plantain gardens belonging to five farmers were damaged and the loss was estimated to around Rs 4 lakh.

Most parts have had no electricity for the last two days and industries and rural life have been affected. As many as 1,209 electric poles and 204 transformers were  damaged amounting to a loss of Rs 2 crore as per the HESCOM disclosure.

People remained indoors and markets and busy streets of all the four towns wore a deserted look since Friday.

Revenue officials are monitoring and arrangements are being made to tackle any situation, stated a source from the office of the assistant commissioner of Sirsi.

Rain Exposes Shoddy Work

Hubballi: Heavy rain over the last three days has affected life in the city. There was a light drizzle followed by gusty winds from dawn on Sunday as well.

The city also received occasional heavy rain. Most of the roads wore a deserted look as people remained indoors.

The rain also exposed the shoddy work done by the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation in filling potholes.

Two-wheeler riders found it difficult to avoid potholes. Many roads were inundated as the drains were choked. People had a tough time negotiating Koppikar Road, Lamington Road, Coen Road and Kittur Chennamma Circle.

In Toravi Hakkal, KLE Colony in the city, trees were uprooted and one fell in Krishi Nagar, Dharwad.

HDMC Commissioner C M Noormansur told Express that emergency teams were formed to tackle any emergency situations. Each zone will have one team, he added.

Torrential Rain Brings Kodagu Dist to a Halt

Madikeri: Torrential rain wreaked havoc in the district on Sunday throwing life out of gear. The district administration has announced a holiday for schools and colleges on Monday. In 2014, heavy rain lashed the district only in the first week of July. But this year, the rains picked pace in June itself. The district received an average rainfall of 83.91 mm. Madikeri taluk recorded 109 mm, Virajpet 67 mm, Somwarpet 74.26 mm and Bhagamandala received 204.4 mm so far. Shanivarshanthe received 93 mm, Sreemangala 80.6 mm, Sampaje 55 mm and Napoklu 81.2 mm. As river Cauvery is overflowing, the Madikeri-Bhagamandala Road was blocked. Tourists who came to the district are in a fix as they did not expect such rain.
