Villagers Boycott GP Bypolls Again

Villagers of Malligawad, Hubballi taluk, boycotted the Gram Panchayat (GP) bypolls on Sunday.

HUBBALLI:Villagers of Malligawad, Hubballi taluk, boycotted the Gram Panchayat (GP) bypolls on Sunday.

The election was to be held for six seats of Malligawad village, which comes under Umachagi GP.

The authorities concerned had issued a notification for re-polling at Malligawad village after residents boycotted the GP polls in June.

Only four nominations were received. But till evening no one came to exercise their franchise, Tahsildar H D Nagavi said.

The Issue

The bone of contention is bringing Malligawad village under Umachagi GP. Residents had demanded GP status for Malligawad and bringing Umachagi village under it.They even challenged it in the court. However, the move of the administration was upheld in the court. Opposing the move, they boycotted the GP polls held in June.
