BELAGAVI: Six burglars proved no match for a 19-year-old girl, who showed presence of mind in not only fending them off successfully but also managing to send them scampering empty-handed.

According to police sources, two of the gang members entered a farm house of one Annappa Patil at Bavana Soudatti village in Raibag taluk on Wednesday evening and asked Surekha Patil for drinking water.

While she was inquiring about their identity, the other four entered the house and snatched her earrings.

Surekha kicked two of them, shoved those near her and ran into the kitchen, the sources said.

She grabbed some chilly powder and flung it at the burglars forcing four of them to flee.

She then beat up the other two with a stick.

One of the two who had snatched her earrings returned it to her and fled with the other burglar when the girl started screaming for help.

This is the fourth burglary in Chikkodi division. However, police claim the reports of burglaries were rumours and appealed to people not to believe “hearsay”. Locals have been guarding their villages in shifts for the last two weeks.

Villagers said a few burglar gangs from Maharashtra have been operating in border villages of the State for a few days.
