Tension Dampens Festivities in Belagavi Dist

BELAGAVI: Tension marred religious celebrations in the district on Sunday.

Police caned a mob which had gathered to protest against some motorists who rode through the neighbourhood shouting slogans in favour of another country on Kacheri Road near Khadak Galli.

Stones were also pelted at a police van and a car near the RTO office at Shivajinagar.

Fort Road too remained tense following rumours of a clash between two communities.

Commercial establishments on Kacheri Road were closed till evening and vehicular movement was stopped till about 3 pm. 

Angry verbal exchanges between the police and people were reported when procession guidelines laid down by the Police Department were violated. Additional security personnel were stationed at sensitive areas to avoid untoward incidents. Hundreds participated in a procession from Pimpalkatta to Asadkhan Darga in Camp area.

Deputy Commissioner N Jayaram, Police Commissioner S Ravi, MLA Feroz Saith, City Congress Block President Asif (Raju) Saith  and others participated in the procession.
