HASSAN: People of Tirupatihalli in Hassan taluk heaved a sigh of relief following the capture of a five-year-old male leopard by forest officials on Monday.
Forest officials had put a cage to capture the leopard recently following protest by villagers. The officials said the leopard is healthy and will be freed into the forest soon.
Crops Destroyed by Elephants
Somwarpet: Hirikara villagers near here have complained to the Forest Department that a herd of wild elephants destroyed coffee, cardamom and paddy crop worth lakhs of ruppes in the past one week.
In a memorandum submitted to the department, the villagers said elephants are straying from Nidtha reserve forest by crossing trenches and solar fence. They urged the officials to repair the solar fence immediately.
They said department is providing meagre compensation when the farmers are incurring thousand of rupees in one night.
