‘Music has the Power to Unite All’

MANGALURU: The culture and tradition of a country would survive only if talent in the field of art is recognised, Dakshina Kannada District Minister B Ramanath Rai said here on Thursday.

He was speaking after inaugurating the four-day ‘Alva’s Virasat’ cultural fest  at Alva’s Palace Ground in Vidyagiri, Moodbidri.

Rai said recognition of talent inspires youths to involve themselves in cultural programmes, which have been going on in Moodbidri for the past 21 years. “As cultural programmes unite people under one roof, no discrimination or hatred is found in the people residing in and around Moodbidri,” he said.

Amjad Ali Khan Honoured

Sarod maestro and Padma Vibhushan awardee Ustad Amjad Ali Khan was presented ‘Alva’s Virasat Award’ during the function. The award consists of `1 lakh, citation and a memento.

After receiving the felicitation, Khan said: “Music is nothing but realisation of God and realisation of art and culture. Though every religion in the world emphasises peace and harmony, still there are conflicts between religions. However, music has a power to unite all the sections of the public. Hence, we the musicians have been preaching peace and harmony among the public through music.”

Delivering the presidential address, Nitte Education Trust President N Vinay Hegde said, Alva’s Education Institution is “one of the best in the world”.

The success of the institution lies largely in its discipline.

“Being a disciplined person himself, Alva has become a role model to every student of Alva’s Education Institution,” he said.

Alva’s Education Trust chairman Dr M Mohan Alva said, Virasat programme has been organised on the College campus for the past 21 years.

“The aim of hosting the programme is to showcase art forms of different states and provide opportunities to the rural talent. Art should not be limited to urban region, it should be extended to the rural areas also,” he said.

Vishwa Nudisiri, Virasat Every 10 yrs

Disclosing a plan of hosting a grand programme every 10 years, Alva said: “There is a plan to host Nudisiri and Virasat as ‘Vishwa Nudisiri, Virasat’ every 10 years. “It is just an effort to honour great talent in a great way,” he said.

MLC Captain Ganesh Karnik, former minister Amaranath Shetty, Executive Director of Canara Bank V S Krishna Kumar, SCDCC Bank President M  N Rajendra Kumar, Amjad Ali Khan’s wife Shubhalakshmi Khan, entrepreneurs like G Shankar, Suresh Bhandary among others were present.
