BELAGAVI: Ramesh Appanna Gasti (56) attached to the District Armed Reserve (DAR) Police allegedly ended his life by shooting himself with his .303 service rifle while on duty at the NCC Armoury Centre in Jadhav Nagar on Friday.
His body was found lying on a cot in the passage at the centre and rifle on the floor.
A police team, headed by DCP Anup Agarwal which rushed to the spot with fingerprint experts and forensic laboratory officials, collected primary information from the armoury staff.
Police said Gasti might have stood on the cot pointing the rifle to his chest.
Armoury centre officials said: “Gasti as usual arrived for work, chatted with those who met him and left for his assigned place. Later we heard a gun shot and found him lying in a pool of blood on the cot.”
The police entered the room by breaking open the door as Gasti had locked it from inside. The ambulance staff declared him dead after checking his pulse.
According to sources, Gasti was an alcoholic. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. A case has been registered at the APMC police station.
