BENGALURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday  said that the state government would set up a Konkani Academic Chair at Mangalore University and promised the required financial support from the government for the same.

The chief minister was responding to an appeal made earlier by Dr P Dayananda Pai, president of the city’s Konkani Samaj. Stressing upon the need to set up an academic chair for research and development of the  language in the University, Pai said a sum of `1 crore would be required for the purpose. He assured mobilisation of `50 lakh  from the Konkani community and requested Siddaramaiah to contribute a similar sum so that the long-cherished goal could be achieved.

Chief Minister said,”A Konkani academic chair will be set up at Mangalore University and the  financial assistance requested will be provided from the next financial year for it.” He also lauded Konkanis for preserving the language over the years despite it not having a script.

Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree said that the ancient language was spoken not merely in Goa but also in parts of Kerala, Mangaluru and a few other states.
