Convicts in Mysuru Stage Maranayaka

MYSURU: Theatre lovers had a rare opportunity of watching a play staged by convicts at Bahuroopi National Theatre Festival in the city on Thursday.

About 30 people, belonging to Sankalpa, a theatre troupe managed by convicts, staged the play Maranayaka, an adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth and written by H S Shivaprakash at Kalamandira. The convicts, most of them wearing jail uniforms, seemed to want to prove that they are not second to trained and professional actors.

The troupe had staged the same play a couple of times at different places during cultural festivals.

Hulugappa Kattimani, who directed the play, said the actors rehearsed for a few weeks in the jail.

Involving convicts in theatre activities will help them take the right path as it teachers the virtues of discipline, patience and cooperation, he said.
