To minimise damage, avoid starting vehicle stalled in water: Experts

BENGALURU: MANY vehicle owners whose cars were caught in the Bengaluru floods are making a beeline for mechanics and towing agencies. Experts, however, say that there are some things the vehicles owners can do to minimise the damage.

Karnataka Automobile Parts and Allied Merchants Association secretary Rajen Bhatha, said, “Motorists should ensure that oil does not get mixed with water and it is better to take the vehicle to an authorised service centre.”

A representative of an insurance firm said insurance agencies can refuse the claim if the vehicle is damaged due to the owner’s carelessness. “For instance, starting a car that has stalled in the rain can be considered as hydrostatic loss, which is not covered under a regular motor insurance policy. The owner should inform the  insurance company as early as possible and is entitled to `1,500 for towing the vehicle to take it to the nearest authorised service centre,” the source said.
