Read, form views on issues, President tells law students

BENGALURU: THE legal fraternity, especially law students, must be on the vanguard of the battle for the rights and welfare of people, said President Pranab Mukherjee here on Sunday.

He was speaking at the 24th convocation of the National Law School (NLSIU) of India University.

He said, “Universities like NLSIU must take the lead in meeting contemporary challenges and ensure that our civilisation’s values of love for motherland, performance of duty, compassion for all, tolerance, pluralism and others are fully entrenched in young minds.”

The President called upon the students to read, learn and formulate views on national issues.

He said a democracy cannot be healthy without informed participation. “It is not enough to merely vote periodically. It requires effective implementation,” he said.

Urging them to engage with “our beautiful, complex and sometimes noisy democracy”, he sought their support in strengthening and refining legal and political institutions.
