Areca, Coconut Trees Wilt in D-K District

MANGALURU: Arecanut and coconut trees have started wilting in the Dakshina Kannadda district, due to lack of water. Farmers in the Dakshina Kannada district are worried about the yield they will get next year.

Farmers have stopped irrigating their plantations for a month. As a result, arecanut, coconut and banana trees have started wilting. Most of the people in the district depend upon cultivating areca. Campco MD Suresh Bhandary told Express that as the temperatures are high, tender coconuts have started falling from trees.

District Horticulture Department deputy director Yogish H R said as most of the water sources had almost dried up, farmers have faced a tough situation this year. The district cultivates arecanut on 35,000 hectares.
