BENGALURU: Some private pre-university colleges which are getting grant-in-aid from the state government are applying for its withdrawal.The number of such colleges in the state is increasing and a majority of them are from Bengaluru. As per the Department of Pre University Education, at least 15 colleges have requested for withdrawal of grant-in-aid. This has triggered a fear among ‘aided’ lecturers about losing their jobs. With 15 colleges applying for withdrawal of grant-in-aid, at least 300 lecturers may become jobless.

In some private PU colleges, the salaries of half of their teachers is paid by the government. They are aided teachers. In some cases, the salaries of all the teachers in a college are paid by the government and such colleges are called private aided colleges. These colleges are not allowed to charge fee higher than what has been prescribed by Department of PU Education.

Thimmaiah Purle, president of Karnataka State Pre University College Teachers Association, said, “If the state government allows this, we will be forced to start an agitation.”
According to lecturers and department officials, colleges are eying higher fee that they can charge if they stop getting aid. “College managements believe that they can get `1 lakh per admission in unaided section,” said Purle.
