HUBBALLI: Condemning clearing of encroachment of revenue land by the taluk administration, a farmer and his daughter tried to commit suicide by consuming poison in front of the tahsildar in Mundargi taluk of Gadag district on Friday.

The victims are identified as Liyaqatali Ballari (64) and Mehaboobi (32). Mundaragi tahsildar Bramaramba Gubbishetty and other officials visited the disputed 12-acre plot near Koralahalli village, which the Ballari family was cultivating from past 30 years.

But officials claim that it is revenue land in record of rights. However, the Ballari family is claiming that the land belongs to their family and did not respond to official notices.

The family approached district court which recently recently passed an order in favour of the taluk administration. Based on the court order, the officials went to clear the encroachment, but the due entered into a verbal duel and consumed poison immediately.

The tahsildar immediately shifted the duo to a government hospital and they were then shifted to KIMS Hopsital, Hubballi. But KIMS authority said that the family members of Liyaqatali took both victims to a private hospital against their medical advise.

Gadag Deputy Commissioner Manoj Jain told Express that the Tahsildar has registered a criminal case against the duo.
