BELAGAVI: The Belagavi police on Wednesday rescued an engineering student, who was allegedly kidnapped by her own friends on the night of April 17.

Twenty three-year-old girl Preeti (name changed), a student of Gogte Institute of Technology (GIT) in Belagavi, was traced to a house in Gadag city. The police have arrested three of the six abductors.

According to police, one of the kidnappers—Divya—a student in the same college, befriended Preeti and invited her for dinner at an eatery near Belagavi bus-stand, where they were joined by the former's friends.

After the dinner, the kidnappers reportedly offered her tender coconut water laced with sleeping pills and drove her in a car to a building in Gadag.

On April 18, the kidnappers called Preeti’s father, and demanded Rs 5 crore ransom to release their daughter. The parents immediately approached Tilakwadi police and handed over the telephone numbers from which the ransom calls were made.

The police formed a special team under DCP G Radhika and subsequently traced the kidnappers in Gadag through the digital trail.

The main accused has been identified as Kedar, a resident of Gadag and a friend of Divya.
