BENGALURU: A man who allegedly created a fake Facebook profile to create rift between the woman he loved and her fiance, has been arrested by Hebbal Police. His act had also resulted in the woman’s fiance breaking the engagement with her.

According to a police official, the arrested, Praveen T and the woman were classmates during engineering and met in 2014. Praveen proposed marriage to her, and she said she would speak to her parents. But since both of them were from different castes, respective parents didn’t give their consent to the marriage. Praveen’s kin are Brahmins while the woman’s family belongs to a Scheduled Caste. While the woman decided to follow her parents’ wishes and refused to continue the relationship, Praveen continued to pester her. He would call her repeatedly despite objection. Both of them stopped speaking in February 2016.

In December 2016, the woman got engaged to a software engineer staying in the US and uploaded news and photos of the engagement on Facebook. Praveen saw this, and with an aim to wreck the marriage, created a fake Facebook profile in the name of Neha. He then messaged to the woman’s fiance that the woman he was going to marry had an affair with another man for 5 years. He messaged the woman too and said unfavourable things regarding her fiance. The messages seemed to have disturbed the techie, who called off the marriage plans during the end of February - barely two months after the engagement. The woman still had no idea who Neha was.

During the last week of February, she ran into Praveen near her home, who enquired about her engagement, and said something to the effect that she deserved whatever had happened. The woman then suspected him of being the person behind Neha’s profile, and filed a complaint against him at the Hebbal Police Station.

Praveen was arrested, questioned and confronted with documentary proof of his crime. He subsequently confessed to the crime and is currently facing trial.
