HUBBALLI: Eating at a dalit’s house does not necessary mean eating food prepared by dalits. This appears to be the logic of BJP leaders.

State BJP president B S Yeddyurappa and company did have their breakfast at the house of Renukappa Kelur, a dalit and BJP worker, here on Thursday. But the food was prepared at the host’s house by a team led by an expert cook. ‘Breakfast at dalits’ houses’ is part of BJP’s statewide programme ‘Shoshitaredege Namma Nadige’ (our walk towards the oppressed).

Thursday’s incident came close on the heels of the former chief minister and others having breakfast at a dalit’s house in Tumakuru where the food was parcelled from a restaurant.

In Hubballi, the BJP leaders got to know the expertise of noted cook Shantangouda of Veerapur Oni in the city. His team prepared upma, kesaribath, poha and groundnut chutney.

About 150 BJP workers had assembled at Kelur’s house but Yeddyurappa made no apparent effort to interact with the members of dalit community.

With a stage erected in front of Kelur’s house, it looked like a felicitation programme, said a few dalits who attended the breakfast event.
