12 killed including a three-year-old girl, 30 injured in Maddur accident

MYSURU: Twelve people including a three-year-old girl were killed and 30 were injured after a goods vehicle they were travelling in rammed into a roadside tree on Maddur-Kunigal highway in Mandya district on Sunday. The vehicle was carrying 60 of a marriage party from Avarasanahalli and neighbouring villages to Mysuru when the driver tried to overtake another vehicle and rammed into the tree. The bride’s sister is among the dead.

While two persons were killed on the spot, four died in Maddur hospital and the remaining in the Mandya district hospital. The deceased are identified as Jayamma (47), Parvathamma (48), Beeramma (51), Madamma (63), Shivanna (45), Sannamma (60), Sarojamma (55), Pooja(16) and Shruti(3). The identity of the others is yet to be established.The injured were shifted to hospitals in Mandya, Maddur and NIMHANS in Bengaluru.The victims, from the bride’s place Avasaranahalli, were on their way to attend the reception at a choultry in Maddur. The groom hails from Shivahalli.

As news of the accident spread, hundreds of people from Avasaranahalli, Shivahalli and nearby villages rushed to the spot to look for their family members. The village and the choultry in Maddur wore a deserted look as many are camping in front of the hospital. Police have rushed to spot. The police have registered a case.
