Only one language can now be used to write Pre-University exams in Karnataka

Starting this year, second-year Pre-University students will have to pick either Kannada or English to write their exams.

BENGALURU: Starting this year, second-year Pre-University students will have to pick either Kannada or English to write their exams.

Earlier, they were allowed to write the exams in both the languages.

As per the directions issued by the State department of Pre University Education, students appearing for the PU II final exams in March/April 2018, must decide on the medium before September 30.

All these years a few students would attempt some questions in Kannada and some in English. “This used to create confusion during evaluation. To avoid this, we have decided to provide the question paper itself in one medium,” said an official from the department.

The number of question papers will be decided after colleges send the final figures on the number of students attending the exam in Kannada and English medium. Also, they will not be given any option to change the medium during or before exams. Candidates will be allowed to write exams only  in the medium they have registered earlier.

However, the department said that they would make an exception when it comes to using technical words in the answer paper.

As per the data available, in the March 2017 PU II annual examination, around 1.2 lakh candidates took the exam in Kannada medium while 2.55 lakh took it in English medium.
