Body of sixth victim washed away in Nagaramadi falls near Karwar recovered

KARWAR:The body of Renuka, who had been washed away in Nagaramadi falls near Karwar along with five others, was found in a field at Idur-Chendia near Karwar on Tuesday.

Six tourists, including four women from Goa, were washed away in Nagaramadi falls located about 14 km from Karwar, on Sunday. Two bodies were fished out on the same day. On Monday, the rescue team traced three more bodies. The police and fire personnel continued the search operation with the help of villagers on Tuesday and traced one more body. The family members of Renuka were camping in Karwar from Sunday. Kavita Marbate, the younger sister of Renuka, said her family originally hails from Kalaburagi and is settled at Comba near Madagoan for several years.

Renuka was the third among six siblings. Both Renuka and Kavita were working in a showroom near their city and both were very close. They never lived without each other, Kavita said. “But on Saturday, Renuka was forced by her friends to visit Nagaramadi falls,” she said.

Lucky survivors

Yashwant Raikar of Goa, who visited Nagaramadi falls along with his friends on Sunday, was also washed away in the flash floods. Everyone, including his family members, thought that he died. But, he luckily survived after being washed away for more than 2-km. He hold on to a branch till the water receded. He said as the water level suddenly increased in the stream, he was helped by some people to climb back to the bank. But, he failed to control his balance and swept away. “The local administration has helped me recover from the shock, after which I joined other members from Goa, who were waiting for the rescue operation to get over,” Yashwant added.
