Dalit assaulted for marrying Muslim girl

Manjunath Gaikwad, who is undergoing treatment at Basaveshwara Hospital in Kalaburagi, has lodged a complaint with Jewargi police station stating that he was beaten by his in-laws.

KALABURAGI: A person belonging to Dalit community was severely beaten by his in-laws and their friends for marrying their daughter a year ago, police sources said here on Wednesday.

Manjunath Gaikwad, who is undergoing treatment at Basaveshwara Hospital in Kalaburagi, has lodged a complaint with Jewargi police station stating that he was beaten by his father-in-law Mohammed Chawoos, mother-in-law Nasima Begum, brother-in-law Saif Ali and four other persons near Naukarara Bhavana of Jewargi on Tuesday. "They not only assaulted me with clubs, but also abused me by taking the name of my caste as I got married to their daughter," Manjunath stated in his complaint.

A native of Jewargi, Manjunath was working at NES Computer Institute in Jewargi and fell in love with Salima Begum who was also working in the same institute. The couple were in love for the last seven years. "As the parents of Salima were opposing our love, we got married in Kalaburagi on August 30, 2017 and relocated there. The NES Computer Institute transferred me from Jewargi Branch to head office of Kalaburagi," he said.

Manjunath said, in the complaint, that he went to Jewargi on Tuesday to meet his mother and brother and to attend some work in the branch office. While returning to Kalaburagi, his in-laws and their friends assaulted me, he added. Salima has also lodged a complaint against her parents and sought protection from them.
